The Ellwood City Area School District has hired a debt collector to tackle school lunch debts.

Superintendent Joseph Mancini said parents in the district have racked up $8,200 in debt since September, when the previous unpaid lunch balance of $20,000 was paid by a local car dealership.

Mancini said the debt that remains at the end of the school year comes out of the money the district used for school programs.

Because of that, the district has hired a company to collect unpaid lunch money.

The company will be paid by the late fees assessed to families, not by the district.

“Our lunch service, they serve kids meals no matter what, from kindergarten to 12th grade, they’re gonna get a breakfast, they’re gonna get a full lunch, so I think that’s important,” said Mancini.

Mancini said the district will continue to send notices to families over the next several months.

He anticipates sending those still deep in debt to the collection agency sometime in March.
